For as long as I can remember growing up, we have had some sort of pet. Whether it be a dog a cat, a gerbil or a fish, my mom always made sure there was some addition to our family.

Since living on my own I’ve been so eager to start my own little family of pets. It started off with gerbils, once they died I got a fish, once he died I got another fish. Then I got married. Darcey was not very keen of animals, so I prayed, asked him about it every once in a while, and then one day… I saw this beautiful dog on the ASPCA web site when searching for dogs in local shelters. Her name was Marley and she was 18 months old. I fell in love with her at first sight and sent the link to my loving husband.

After a little while I asked him what he thought and he said he had to close the page because she was too cute. That sounded like a good sign to me! So I asked him about the possibility of going to look at her and see if she would be our new daughter. He agreed!

After much searching and some complications, we found her and she was everything I had imagined and more! Darcey even fell in love with her! She was the absolute perfect dog, and we decided to keep her in our home forever.

The first few weeks were a little difficult as she learned her place, our routines, and that using the carpet as her toilet was not okay. Eventually she learned. I even taught her how to roll over!

She really is an awesome dog!

Yes she still chews on some things and has a bit of a separation anxiety problem and barks at strangers when they try to pet her, but she is a puppy and with gentle guidance and love, I’m sure she will learn better.

One thing I never realized was how much dogs actually shed! See I grew up with pets that shed constantly, but my mom vacuumed so often that I never really noticed it much. The other day I looked around our house and was astounded at how much our dear little Harley Quinn shed! Made me really appreciate all my mommy did when I was younger. She is an inspiration to me and I’m glad she taught us how to clean well so that I can try to keep up with the hairball that is our dog.🙂

Life with a dog is awesome. Its nice to come home to something that’s always joyful to see you. To have something to snuggle with when you are sick at home alone. To always have a playmate. To be able to train and teach something new tricks to show off to parents and friends. To have something to take care of and remember to brush, feed, water, walk and bathe. Dogs are family.

To give a little background to this story. It has been a little over a year since I’ve gotten my hair cut, so it was getting to be longer than I’ve had it in over 8 years. Personally, I prefer short hair. It fits my personality WAY better than longer hair. And it’s fun!

This past weekend, a friend from Carrollton was coming by Wills Point to give haircuts to those of us at GFA who used to have her cut our hair more regularly. Which was a HUGE blessing because I’ve been a wimp at looking for a hair salon out here, in the middle of nowhere, for me to try out. Also, I am a fan of the show “Arrow” on TV and there’s a girl in the show named Sin who has my dream hair and the same face shape as me. So it was time for me to go back to my “fun” hair.

So this is my new do: (before, mid, and after shots)

Now for the story that the title eludes to

After church on Saturday evening, a group of our friends were going out to eat at Chilli’s in Forney. When we arrived, I had to make use of the facilities; so I made my way to the restrooms. Upon entering the bathroom, a young girl, around the age of nine, was washing her hands. I saw her eyes get a little bigger, with a glimmer of confusion crossing her face as I walked over to one of the stalls. I usually think it’s rather humorous that people’s first glances place me as a boy, but then they usually come to the conclusion that I’m a girl.

I finished my business, and by this time the little girl was no longer in the bathroom; so I went to the sink, washed my hands, and then proceeded to play with my hair to make it do what I wanted it to do. (I hadn’t “done” it since I had it cut, so it was just air-dried and a little flat). As I was fixing my hair, the same little girl opened the door to come in and as she saw me, she promptly turned around and went back outside the bathroom. This made me laugh.

After fixing my hair, I put my purse on my shoulder and exited the bathroom, only to be greeted by this little girl in the blue shirt. Apparently she thought I was a guy and was waiting outside the bathroom till I left so she could go back in.

I promptly went to tell my friends of my strange encounter, and we all laughed at the silly situation.

I’m so happy I have my short hair again, regardless of the fact that some children might confuse me with a guy. Besides, Darcey prefers my short hair. He has said multiple times since I got it cut “I love your hair” or “That’s the girl I fell in love with”.

Do any of you have short hair? Have you had similar experiences? I’d be curious to hear your stories.🙂

Happy Mother’s Day to the best Mommy a daughter could ever be blessed with! Not only is she my Mommy, but she is also one of my closest friends and my sister in Christ. Though we’ve been through some pretty rough times, God has protected us so much and has brought us closer to Him and each other in many ways. I’m still surprised at how alike we really are! But the older I get, the more I am happy that I’m becoming more like my Mommy because I do more things that remind me of her!

Just last night I had a longing for my Mommy that comes every time I’m sick or feeling blue. She was always there for me, and still always is. I love her more than words can describe. I miss those times we would dance to the credit songs of movies, or the times we created our own musicals as we cleaned the house or cooked together, the hundreds of times my friends would ask if we could go to my house because my mom was just so cool and fun to be around, the awesome birthday parties she would cater to our liking, the patience she granted to us even though she always had bad headaches, the values she taught us about how important family is, the warm embraces she gave to comfort me after the death of a pet, the encouragement she gave to pursue my dreams, the times she came to school with me for “bring your parent to school day” and my classmates thought she was a new student and not my mom, how she trusted the Lord to take care of me through my various mission trips overseas, how we would sing “You’ve Got a Friend” by James Taylor while waiting for the doctor in the doctors office, how she believed me when I told her about my dad and walked through the difficulty of that situation with me, and even the times she would get frustrated at my rebellion in wearing non-matching socks everyday on purpose.

She will always be my Mommy and I’ll always be her Alleycat.

Happy Mother’s Day! I really wish I could be there in Pennsylvania with you to celebrate!

My Cousin Sammy and me

My Cousin Sammy and me

This past weekend, I took a trip up to Pennsylvania to take part in a bridal shower my mom, some family, and a few friends were holding for me. While I was up there, I had a great time catching up with those I haven’t talked to in a long time. I also had the opportunity to hang out with my cousin Samantha, she is 11 years old and enjoys art and writing stories. Here is a story she wrote for me, it took her about 20 minutes or so to come up with it based off a our conversation previously (spelling/grammar were not corrected):

The Adventures of Alex and her 8 Kids

The house was quiet at first but then 8 kids came running the house their shoes covered in mud. Each kid stop and put their coats on the coat rack and their shoes on the ground. Their were 2 girls and 6 boys. The 2 girls were twins Blair and Catherine. Both girls were 7 years old. They fought every day. The 6 boys names were Ezekiel who was 5 years old. Elijiah who was 8 years old. Asher who was 15 years old. Tobiah who was 14 years ld. Calvin who was 3 years old. And finally the youngest who was 1 year old was Jackson. Now 8 kids are not easy to take car of. There are a lot of reasponsibility. But Alex and Tim are veary proud of how they raised their 8 little mirials. They love each and every one of them.
When Blair and Catherine came in the house they started agueing over who gets to sleep with Fin the family dog. I want to sleep with him cried Blair. No I want to I am older. Said Catherine. By one minute said Blair. Girls girls said Alex you both can sleep with him you both shair the same room. Okay said the girls.
Whats for dinner asked the kids. Roast Beef mashed potato’s amd green beans said Alex. Yum said the kids.
Hey daddy’s home said Jackson. Daddy screamed the kids. Theirs my 8 little miriacls said Tim. Mmm do I smell roast beef said Tim. Yep said Alex. Hey don’t forget the green beans said Ezekiel. And the mash potato’s said Elijiah. With that the family went to the table and ate dinner.
THE END.
By: Samantha Hoffman”

Not only was I touched and super happy that she wrote me a story, I was also surprised that she is so much older than when I left 5 years ago that she can write a story, I was amused at how cute the story was, AND I was quite impressed at how good the story was for an 11 year old! I love my family.

It’s one of those days where I am glad the Lord has me serving Him at Gospel for Asia, but I just want to be home with my Mommy and brother. To snuggle on the couch with Mommy and talk in song till our voices are hoarse, then dance to the ending credit song of a favorite movie. Make some pancakes with chocolate chips in the shape of Mickey Mouse and hearts. To put together a puzzle while listening to Linkin Park with my brother playing a game on the computer in the same room. Spend time with my bro and teach him how to draw anime. To jump on the trampoline with my bro and then climb some trees, then lay on the floor looking at the ceiling and just talk.

I miss all those memories, and it’s times like these where I just sit here and remember all those good times and long for the closeness of a simple hug and whisper of “I love you”. I love my family so much, and it’s so hard to be away from them sometimes. However, it’s memories like these that remind me of what many thousands of families in Asia don’t have and why I am serving the Lord here at Gospel for Asia where everyday we see the light of Jesus shine through our brothers and sisters on the field. Ever reaching out in love to those who have no hope left and never knew just how much worth they have in Christ.

Praise the Lord for my childhood, for my family, and for the opportunity I have to love others in Jesus’ name.

This Thanksgiving, I had the wonderful privilege to travel up to good ol’ Pennsylvania to visit with my family. Tim also had the chance to get to know my family a bit better, and together we got to meet a new cousin of mine, Raegan, and my brother’s girlfriend, Jacqui. Over all it was a marvelous trip!

Praise the Lord we had 14 days to spend on vacation, and unlike most of my expeditions to Pennsylvania since moving to Texas, this was not a whirlwind trip, packed to the brim with meetings and get togethers; rather, it was relaxing and meetings were spaced out to where we could breathe between gatherings.

I titled this post “Where’s my phone?” because throughout the journey, it seemed as though I was always misplacing my phone, and so that phrase became a recurring theme of the trip. Thankfully, I had people with me who are a bit more observant and less forgetful than I am, so the phone was never truly lost.

I think Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. Christmas is a close second, but Thanksgiving is definitely my number one. I love it because the family is much more relaxed, full of smiles, less crazy, and there is a feeling of warmth that envelops the whole. Yeah, there is quarreling amongst some of the children, and there may be some family drama in the underlying layer of the gathering, but over all we are just enjoying people’s company and expressing love towards each other the best we can.

I’ve always loved gathering with my family. I love them all so much! The hugs, the quick catching up, the energy, the smiles and laughter, the quirks, watching the kids play and playing with them when possible, watching my grandparents as they enjoy the company of those they love, the memories shared, the new memories being made… I love everything about them.

What made this trip better than the rest I think, is that it wasn’t just my family that made Thanksgiving enjoyable; it was my church family that made me feel welcome as well. What a privilege to be able to share with them a little bit of what the Lord is doing through Gospel for Asia because of their prayers and support! It was neat to see how the Lord isn’t just moving through GFA, but is moving through Calvary Chapel Chester Springs as well.

I also had the opportunity to see family I haven’t seen in a long time! Uncle Sue and Aunt Bob drove from Indiana to visit, Tim and I drove to Hamburg to visit with Jeremiah, Kristie, Madilyn, Gavin, Raegan and GranPat!

The last two days of our visit, my Grandparents took my mommy, Tim, Brandon, Jacqui and me to New York City! I have never been to NYC before, even though I’ve lived in Pottstown, Pennsylvania for pretty much my entire life. There we toured some of the popular touristy places, like Rockefeller Center, the LEGO store, the 911 memorial, a carriage ride through Central Park, a few Taxi rides (when our feet just wouldn’t carry us any farther), a random coffee shop, a few other places, and we saw the Broadway show Stomp!

Overall, it was a restful trip. Yeah we did a lot, but those events were spread out over 14 days. Originally it was going to be 13 days, but our flight back was cancelled due to an ice storm in Dallas the day we were scheduled to fly back. I’m not complaining though! That extra day was a blessing!

Thank you to everyone who I got to see on my trip, I would include everything that happened, but that would be like writing a small novel, so I’ll just leave you with this quick glimpse.

What is love? Well, according to 1 Corinthians 13

“Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails.”

One of the things I love most about God is that the Bible says

“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.” – 1 John 4:7-8

Without Him, there is no love. It is through Him that we as believers are able to love the way it states in 1 Corinthians. In my own power it is easy to “love” people who I get along with day to day, when I feel like it and when it is convenient to me. But deep down, that kind of love is a selfish love. Notice how it is dependent upon whether or not I feel like it. But God’s love is neverending; it is unfailing. He loved me WHILE I WAS STILL A SINNER! (Romans 5:8)

“In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. In this love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.” – 1 John 4:9-10

Through me, God is able to love others if I will lay down my selfish pride and allow Him to use me in that way. Which is why forgiveness is so important.

See, because Jesus was sinless, He was able to take on all the sins of the world (a crushing and agonizing weight) so that we sinful beings may one day stand in the Glory of God as heirs to the Kingdom of light. There is no sin greater than the others, it is all sin in the eyes of the Lord. All we need to do is repent of our sin and ask for His forgiveness, and He freely gives it because He paid in full at Calvary. It’s that simple!

How can I accept this forgiveness for my own sins and not pass it onto others? This reminds me of the parable Jesus shares in Matthew 18:21-35.

“Then Peter came to Him and said, ‘Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?’
Jesus said to him, ‘I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven. Therefore the kingdom of heaven is like a certain king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. And when he had begun to settle accounts, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents. But as he was not able to pay, his master commanded that he be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and that payment be made. The servant therefore fell down before him, saying, ‘Master, have patience with me, and I will pay you all.’ Then the master of that servant was moved with compassion, released him, and forgave him the debt. But that servant went out and found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii; and he laid hands on him and took him by the throat, saying, ‘Pay me what you owe!’ So his fellow servant fell down at his feet and begged him, saying, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you all.’ And he would not, but went and threw him into prison till he should pay for the debt. So when his fellow servants saw what had been done, they were very grieved, and came and told their master all that had been done. Then his master, after he had called him, said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you begged me. Should you not also have had compassion on your fellow servant, just as I had pity on you?’ And his master was angry, and delivered him to the torturers until he should pay all that was due to him. So My heavenly Father also will do to you if each of you, from his heart, does not forgive his brother his trespasses.'”

This is what brings us to the real reason for this blog post. See, Fathers Day is this Sunday, June 16th. A day to honor our dads and encourage them as they continue to lead our households as Christ leads the Church. But I have two earthly dads…

One is my biological father. I met him when I was 18 years old when he found me on Facebook. And I am so blessed that the Lord brought him back into my life, and I do love him and the rest of that side of my family. I also look forward to growing that relationship with him.

Second is my Daddy. He is the one who raised me as his own daughter since before I can remember. He adopted me under his name when I was 5 years old. He comforted me when I was sad, taught me how to drive, tickled me, and watched Spongebob Squarepants with me and my brother. But my Dad sinned, as we all do, however this sin put him in jail… where he currently is. Yes this was a big sin, especially in the world’s eyes, but God loves him and will or has already forgiven him.

I believe in a God who forgives sins as far as the east is from the west. Who keeps no records of wrongs. Yes, Dad sinned, but God can heal and forgive. Nothing is impossible with Him.

I am not saying that once he is out of jail that everything will go back to how it was… No, that’s redicilous and frankly it would be very unwise for me to do. And if anyone knows how bad his sin was, it would be me, because I had to endure it for 9 years of my life, though it hurt many whom I love. But that doesnt change the fact that he is my dad and I love him. I believe God will restore him and will heal him because I have been praying for that. And God answers prayers.

So this Fathers Day I find myself conflicted. As Im sure you can now imagine why. I would love to celebrate this Father’s Day without feeling like a horrible person for even thinking about my dad. He’s my dad, and he’s the one the Lord gave to me. I’d love to tell him that every time I hear the song “Good Night My Angel” by Billy Joel, or “Butterfly Kisses” by Bob Carlisle I think of him and all the good memories I have of him. Because the bad do not out way the good. I’ve been told my whole life to think positively and to remember good things even if bad things happen.

So happy Father’s Day Daddy, and happy Father’s Day Danny (my biological Dad). I love you both.

Yesterday I had the privilege to spend quality time with my Mommy, made extra special because it happened to be a few days after Mother’s Day. She was asked to give a presentation for work here in Dallas, so she took a halfday and was able to spend it with me. We went to Escape and she experienced the goodness of bubble tea (she didn’t like it), her faces were most amusing as she tried it. “They feel like snot!” she exclaimed with a sickened expresion on her face. To which I responded “Oh, but it tastes amazing!” and happily slurped up a few of the “pearls” through my straw.

Next we went to the lake in the huge community near where I live and we relaxed near the water’s edge enjoying the gentle breeze and the mist it carried from the fountain in the middle of the lake. Soon we were joined by a few mallard ducks. There were about 6 males who were chatty and then a female appeared with her ducklings in tow. Upon seeing the female approach, the males swarmed her and proceeded to chase her as she was tried to keep her ducklings in line. It was a very funny scene to watch, and we pretended to speak for the ducks:

“Hey! Leave me alone! I’m just trying to take my kids for a swim!” – Female

“Hey! HEY!!! Look at me! Can I help? HEeeellloooooo Gorgeous!” – Males speaking over each other

“That’s it children, we are never coming back to this lake…. talk about rude.” – Female to ducklings

As we were laughing about the ducks we hear this scream “LUUUUCY! LUCY GET BACK HERE! LUUUUUCCCCYYYYY!!!!!”

We look over startled at this teenage girl yelling for a small dog that had broken off its leash and started chasing the Canada geese in the lake. The geese were none too happy and started freaking out trying to intimidate the dog. We got up and went over to the girl to see if we could help at all, but the dog was getting further and further from shore and the geese were getting angrier. I thought for a second that if the dog started to have issues, I would jump in after it, but only if it got that bad. I didn’t want to see a dog drown or get killed by a goose.

We tried to help calling for the dog, but then a teenage boy comes up near her and takes his shoes, socks, shirt, and hat off, takes his phone out of his pocket and dives in after the dog. He doesn’t have much luck as this little dog was booking it. So the boy came back to shore. By this point in time, the dog had made its way over to a dock that was nearby and the girl ran over to take it out of the water. That boy sure got some major brownie points.

Over all it was a rather eventful day and I thankfully didn’t have to jump into a lake.🙂
